I recall a variant view on this when BP gave a series of messages in Irving concerning the army and the citizens. It sounded as if the everyone would be accepted and cared for with equal care. But the truth was that after those message were over, it was only those doing the "front line" work who were worthy of anything. The rest of us just hung on by our own strength. Reminds me now of the opening scenes in "The Man in the Iron Mask" where all the food was sent to the front lines of a war no one wanted and only food that had already spoiled was provided to the people of Paris.
