Default labor day conference

Just some fond memories...

Did anyone here attend this conference that is happening at the Hyatt Regency in Burlingame?

I won't dwell too much on some other memories(YP meetings-the passing around of the fliers making members aware of Titus Chu's excommunication). But a cute anecdote.

I was a little marsupial when my folks first started going and went up through about middle-high school-they are going this weekend. It was a yearly ritual for me but had little to do with getting ready for the meetings...

About a week before I would set about making a huge collection of paper airplanes. Light gliders were best. In particular-I really loved these...

During whatever freetime we had(often after the last meeting when the adults were browsing the ministry publications in the atrium...this had the additional benefit of being nighttime and therefore dark) I and sometimes a small band of additional miscreants would find our way up to the 9th floor with the gliders. After launching a single glider if we were fortunate and the glider was well built we would watch it glide magnificently above the crowds-a couple occasions getting additional lift from the AC system in the hotel and circling and staying aloft for 2 minutes or so before finally landing in various places. Other times they hit walls and ended up in the planters or crashed into the towering bamboo plants. I would then go retrieve those that I could. Unfortunately younger and less skilled kids caught on and built their own planes...usually darts. These would promptly death spiral downward and catch the attention of hotel security. It then became a game of going into the nearest friends room or running down the stairs to escape them.

I often ran low on serviceable gliders over the weekend...plus often other YP wanted to learn how to make paper planes...so we would swipe piles of outlines from the previous meetings and build simpler models to continue flying.

On one hilarious occasion I through a single glider and it circled quickly before landing in front of one of the restaurants on the atrium level. A custodian/security and a restaurant guy were talking and saw it. The security guy walked over and picked it up...then looked up. We were standing on the overpass so promptly stepped back to avoid being seen. A couple minutes later I tossed the next glider that lo and behold started to circle again. The two folk were still standing there and the glider swung behind and went neatly between the security guys legs....

Just a fun story I thought I would share. Perhaps someone here picked one up over all the years?

Wasn't it Lee himself who would declare "Sail On!"
