Calvin is the kid. Hobbes is the cat (tiger). Hobbes is actually really a stuffed tiger who Calvin imagines is alive. So Hobbes is actually part of Calvin's personality. Calvin is the impulsive, emotional one; Hobbes is the more mature, thoughtful one. It was the best comic ever. Here's one of my favorites:

It is interesting that Watterson named the main characters after a theologian and a philosopher! I had no idea back then, but now it makes sense considering the wit that he used in the comic strip. It doesn't seem like Watterson was a believer, but was wrestling with the big issues nonetheless.
