Newcomer directory idea
I got the idea to have a stickied post (or some other post that newcomers can easily see) that explains what this site is, what the LC is, and what are the problems with it. Soooooort of like all those LC website mirrors, but, you know, not LC aligned.
Partial first draft here: This post seeks to be a starting point for newcomers to the forum. It contains a set of reading material general and comprehensive in nature to introduce them to What is the Local Church? Quote:

Re: Newcomer directory idea
Yes, Steve Isitt's "Hiding History in the Lord's Recovery" is absolutely required reading if anyone wants to know what happened. Once you see the patterns of behavior emerge over time it all makes sense. At our core, we're arguably creatures who not only want to belong, but also want to understand. And Steve's history is essential in that regard.

Completely forgot about this!
This is what I have at the moment: This post seeks to be a starting point for newcomers to the forum. It contains a set of reading material general and comprehensive in nature to introduce them to What is the Local Church? Quote:
A History of the Lord's Recovery in the US: This is a timeline of the major events in the history of the Lord's Recovery starting from Witness Lee's arrival in America until his death in 1997. What's wrong with it? - Doctrine An Open Letter to the Leaderahipof Living Stream Ministry and the "Local Churches": A letter/petition signed by 70+ Christian scholars highlighting controversial statements made by Witness Lee regarding the Christian faith. The Church in Edmonton?: An outsider's look into a typical Sunday meeting of a Local Church, and her issues with the material covered in the Prophesying Meeting. This shows the LC Doctrine concerning the "denominations" through an outsider's eyes. What's wrong with it? - Practice What's Wrong with the LC?: A thread that lists off several points that can be argued as the "top points" of contention in the LC. Listed off are: Corruption, Subjectivity, Hypocrisy, the placing of "special persons" on a pedestal, Control, contempt for "works", Pride, practice and abuse of "Deputy Authority", and contempt for Spiritual Gifts. How Much to Throw Out?: a discussion thread centering around what aspects of the LC to throw out and what to keep. WARNING: long. Other materials on specific subjects: WARNING! Re: Newcomer directory idea
Thank you Unsure for this thread!
This forum board really lacks organization, and it's really a shame to me as the administrator for all these years. Maybe some of you out there can give me a hand on how to make it more user friendly, especially to people coming for the first time to seek information about Witness Lee, Watchman Nee and the Local Church. As always, I'm open to suggestions! Your brother who is unto Him -

I found all the writings by well-respected former members very helpful. Here is a partial list:

We can imagine that there are people out there with little awareness of the history of the group, and its dynamics. Just give them an outline. If they want to pursue the details, fine. Just let a few sentences from each make the point. Brevity is essential. Second, combine this with a few testimonies from the forum members, just as testallthings has done with the "Gleanings" thread. But, again, the submissions must be edited severely, or the reader will abandon the chase. The key is to make the point. Don't bury it in detail. Invite the reader to pursue detail as they see fit.

Re: Newcomer directory idea
Directory v0.3. Will add more quotes and create a "Who's who" section.
This post seeks to be a starting point for newcomers to the forum. It contains a set of reading material general and comprehensive in nature to introduce them to the Local Church and to give them a window into understanding the problems and baggage that the group carries with it. What is this website? This website, Local Church Discussions, is a community for individuals who associated with the Local Church at some point in their lives, whether they be member, former member, or family and/or friend of a member. Its focus is discussion on where the Local Church went wrong in its journey to preach the "highest gospel" and the abuses of leadership that continue to plague the church to this day. What is the Local Church? Quote:

History of the Local Church An unfinished book by Don Rutledge (username Hope). The two chapters finished provide a picture of the early church in the USA - both its happy beginnings and the emerging problems that would go to shape the Local Church into what it is today. What do they believe? Comments on Local Church Doctrines A quick overview of the theological beliefs of the Local Church, as well as common practices and expectations in the church. What's wrong with it? - Doctrine An Open Letter to the Leaderahipof Living Stream Ministry and the "Local Churches" A letter/petition signed by 70+ Christian scholars highlighting controversial statements made by Witness Lee regarding the Christian faith.
The Church in Edmonton? An outsider's look into a typical Sunday meeting of a Local Church, and her issues with the material covered in the Prophesying Meeting. This particular meeting shows the LC Doctrine concerning the "denominations" through an outsider's eyes.
The Local Church of Witness Lee Linked in pdf form is an excerpt from a 1980 book The New Cults by Walter Martin, detailing the history, structure, and practices of the Local Church of the Time. Many of the things described in this excerpt still ring true today.
What's wrong with it? - Practice In the Wake of the New Way A book written by Steve Isitt (username Indiana) concerning the damage done to the churches by the "New Way" - the reorganization of the Local Church into a vehicle for the ministry for the purpose of constituting the saints with the "truth".
What's Wrong with the LC? A thread that lists off several points that can be argued as the "top points" of contention in the LC. Listed off are: Corruption, Subjectivity, Hypocrisy, the placing of "special persons" on a pedestal, Control, contempt for "works", Pride, practice and abuse of "Deputy Authority", and contempt for Spiritual Gifts. How Much to Throw Out? A discussion thread centering around what aspects of the LC to throw out and what to keep. WARNING: long. Can the Local Church Leadership Say, "We Were Wrong?" A letter written by Jane Carole Andersen (username Thankful Jane) to representatives of afaithfulword.org asking for a fair judgement while also challenging the Christian Research Institute over the legitimacy of their article "We Were Wrong".
A Future and a Hope A book written by John Myer - a former elder in the Church in Cleveland - concerning how to move on from the Local Church and how to not repeat its mistakes.
Other materials on specific subjects: WARNING! "Christians on Campus" A post exposing the uglier side of the youth organization Christians on Campus, a recruiting arm of the Local Church.

Re: Newcomer directory idea
A big thanks to Unsure for taking the time to put together all these links!
Let's get some more input from the members out there, and then put together a practical application for the Forum Homepage. It's way past due that we have something like this for lurkers and people seeking information regarding Witness Lee and the Local Church movement. -

Re: Newcomer directory idea
Thank you Unsure for your effort!
I think the next points fall under the "What's wrong with it?" category but I believe it is worth mentioning them: - What do they believe about other Christian churches and Christianity in general? - What do they believe about themselves and their founder, Witness Lee? I am sorry, I don't have the links at hand.

That will give the new reader (we assume no previous exposure) the 1-minute summation of the LC, in their own words. Second, should they want corroborative testimony, give three of the more comprehensive examples. I nominate Hope, Indiana, Thankful Jane. Third, give some of the contemporary discussion on this website. Fourth, give links to other sites like John Myers. The idea is to give the reader an opportunity to "see what it's all about" without wasting their time. Then, if they want to read on, offer some supporting materials. That way they don't have to wade through a lot of material to get answers. Give them something to make an initial assessment of the group, then offer more material if they want to read further.

Re: Newcomer directory idea
Directory v0.4. Made this while somewhat sleep deprived, listening to emo J-Rock, and in the middle of a mild panic attack while also trying to take aron and ICA's advice. This will be messy.
Feel free to copy and edit the actual text of the post as opposed to simply commenting. The brothers and sisters on this website who lived through these events are probably more qualified to speak and summarize them than myself, who only experienced times after the Titus Chu quarantine. I would make a cleaner and nicer looking directory, but I want to get at least some response to feedback out in a timely manner. ------------------------------------------ This post seeks to be a starting point for newcomers to the forum. Re: Newcomer directory idea
There is a tension between trying to be detailed, and comprehensive, and trying to be simple and accessible. Someone, meaning you, is probably going to have to decide where the lines are.
Having said that, it's a pretty good shot at a first effort. IMHO. And such an effort is necessary because every day people are getting contacted by this group, and told "It may be with us you've found a better way" (a line from the song, We Love the Church Life). Jesus is the way, and now WL's Local Church is proposed to the unsuspecting contact as 'a better way'. New and improved. High peak. God's best. Home, home in the church, where we've given up our search. Which seems like a young girl, pining for love, who gets swept off her feet by a charming man, who later it turns out is already married. Or thrice-divorced. Or an abuser. Or a drug addict. Or whatever, carefully concealed at first and second and even third meeting. Once the emotional commitment is made, and the social contract is sealed, the unpleasant truth begins to emerge. So why not make the truth available at the first meeting? Better for all involved.
