Dear Ones,
I have had very similar experiences to countmeworthy while listening to the very CDs you are referring to. In Raleigh we love to sing the new comterporary songs and the old traditional hymns and old LC supplement tunes. Often some get together just to sing and sing and sing. They let me join in as a joyful noise. I will find out how to post some of the songs of praise and thanksgiving that our local saints have written. I am sure they will be a supply. I just recently bought (again) a pile of CDs from http://christianbook.com, mostly from the discount bin.. I was feeling the need for more Christian music for my long commute to work and back (1-1.5h each way). Anyways, right now, the songs that I am loving the most, and bring me to tears every time I hear them:
David Meece - We Are The Reason Steven Curtis Chapman - His Strength is Perfect Steven Curtis Chapman - My Redeemer is Faithful and True After being stuck with only LSM approved hymns for a while now, I have found it extremely liberating to hear good Christian music again. And as a bonus, my wife keeps swiping the CDs to listen to them, so she's getting a dose of non-LSM Christian music too ![]() |

The man was wildly converted and served the Lord with a reckless abandon like none other. Many of the songs he wrote as a newly saved young man have become classics in the church. The songs from the saints in the LC are to me some of the most beautiful, encouraging and Christ-centered music I have enjoyed. I still have the Divine Romance CD and enjoy many of Howard's deep, heart-felt songs. I continue to enjoy the NYCYPCD and purchase any new one that comes out. They have helped me through many a difficult time. We used to sing and worship the Lord like this all the time in every meeting. We were always so in love with Him and could always sense His love for us. I wonder my brother do the saints still sing like this in the meetings of the church?

I recall that was one of his main concerns about spiritual music. Given the Bible's clear warnings about not loving the world, and friendship with the world being enmity with God, I understand the concern. I did a Bible word search on the word "world" and find the main concerns about the world being: a) wisdom of men that exalt themselves and their thinking above God's b) material possessions becoming what we live for and rely on versus God c) lust of the flesh d) reliance on doing the law versus the Spirit by faith e) lust of the eyes f) pride of life Are any of these in either song? No |

I like the Gaither youtube channel. There are a lot of older hymns, some of which are sung in the LC. Coming from a LC background, it's harder to relate to more modern Christian music (but I am gradually learning to do so). Many great for worship. And even the ones that aren't are still great songs, just not necessarily for worship. I have a hard time selecting the best, but Come Thou Fount, is neat the top.

I do like them. But they are so hard to remember because even the "traditional" services tend toward collections that they rotate through.
But one thing about older hymns is that they tend to be more focused on content than on melody. I like melodies, and I like harmony. But without worthy texts, they might as well be instrumentals played as people pray or they "pass the plate." But the best ones often seem to be less catchy musically but more solid in theology and the emotion of worship (not just the emotions). I like songs that are thoughtful. Even contemplative. (I know that term has taken a beating in some circles recently.) Where I attend, the bulletin has in insert for the traditional service laying out all the songs, scripture that will be read, etc. I take that insert and often go home, get out my guitar, and try to simplify one of more of the hymns down to something I can play and is still pleasing for singing or reading. At some level, my notions for doing this are beyond my time, patience, and musical ability, but I keep thinking that "Great Is Thy Faithfulness" in the same service as "You'll Come," along with two or three times through a short chorus (words by David, tune by I can't remember who) of: . . . . D Have mercy on me, oh God . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . G According to your steadfast love . . Em . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . A -A4 -A According to your great compassion Em . . . . . . . . . . . . . . A . . . . .-A4 -A Blot out my many transgressions . . . Em . . . . . . . . . . . A And wash away all my iniquities . . . . . . . . . . . D Cleanse me from sin (Sorry, but without the dots the chords collapse to the left margin) Did it in a choir 20 years ago (part of a medley with "My Faith Looks Up to Thee"), then later we occasionally used it as part of worship just before the preacher came to pray.

It was hard not to listen to one of the others nearby on the page. I started one and was greeted by a stringing of LCM catchphrases. By the end of about 4 lines there had been mention of God's economy (so glorious), consummated, God's eternal purpose . . . . I just couldn't help but kill it then and there. A smorgasbord of Leeology. Shot-gunning every high-sounding phrase they had in their arsenal. It would have made me laugh if it had not made me so ill.
And unlike the one JJ linked (which is at least mostly a regular hymn with no video), this one had pretty scenery scrolling words along with the choir (despite being called Karaoke). I know this thread is about music we like. But so much of the LCM music was, and is, about catching people who think that simple and focused is poor and theologically (or Leeologically) jam-packed is what worship and singing is all about. Impress everyone with the depth of your theology. Nothing trite like care for the dying, or Lord have mercy on me. Not even as low as the gospel of salvation. It must be nearly unable to contain the amount of stuff that can be crammed-in.

Then he ascends into heaven to the Father's side, while an angel tells the disciples he will return the same way he left. Then he advocates for them at the Father's side while the Holy Spirit testifies concerning Him and convicts the world of sin and righteousness. Paul said Jesus stripped off the ordinances, making an open display of them. The Holy Spirit descends upon the gathered church and empowers the disciples to announce the resurrection of Christ and salvation in Jesus. Some think they are drunk. Many believe and others scoff. The rulers of the Jews and Rome tried to kill this movement, but the more they tried the more it spread. The more they killed the Christians, the more people were captured in His victory train. "How Great Thou Art" is among the best hymns. I have also recent come across a song by Sara Groves, "He's Always Been Faithful," that fits with it so nicely. I have even contemplated a choir rendition that splices in part of the old hymn.

The ending is intended to juxtapose the softening and contemplative ending of the new song with the somewhat oratorical effect of the line from the original. Our contrition and awe set up against the majesty of God. If I really wanted to do something with it, I would probably work with a true musician who would have additional suggestions (or tell me it just doesn't work). And give it a sufficient score to set out the parts and a rough piano accompaniment.

I do like the doxology. I also like "Holy, Holy, Holy." While not entirely on the Father, I have enjoyed a setting in which the modern worship hymn "Revelation Song" (Worthy is the Lamb who was slain. Holy, Holy is He . . . .) moving straight into "Holy, Holy, Holy" loosing the band (piano only) for the first verse, then the rest (one or more verses, as desired) a cappella.
I think you may see that while I do not like choosing song styles for the purpose of the style, the manner of doing a song is often a secondary, but important part of the song. If you like the song "Beautiful One" (a fairly upbeat song of the last decade or so), I do too. But several years ago, the music leader at the church I was attending eliminated the chorus, using the pre-chorus as the only chorus, and turned-down the tempo and intensity. Slightly altered the chords to include a couple of minors and you hardly realize it is the same song. And it is a positive change. This link has several videos. One of them has become damaged (Praise to the Lord, the Almighty) and is only about half there. There are also a couple that were from a separate Thursday night modern worship venue that was hosted by the church but organized by others (although some of the "locals" were involved). Those are the "Mezzanine Floor" videos. The list includes the Beautiful One and Revelation Song/Holy, Holy, Holy. There is also an original, "Kyrie (Lord Have Mercy)" that I have come to really appreciate. I never heard it live but only on the video. Ignoring the more raucous Mezzanine Floor videos, you get a little glimpse of some recent history of worship that has influenced my thinking. And I am not saying I don't like the Mezzanine Floor stuff. Just not sure that it is always right for corporate worship — at least in the sense of the primary gatherings.

Again, I think that sometimes it works well. And sometimes it doesn't. And sometimes you cause people to be lost in paying attention to which word to use rather than the meaning of the song. I know that is the reason that some of the modern versions have completely different tunes. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. Yet younger ones often like the newer versions simply because they are newer. As if that is the reason something is good. Same goes for liking the old hymns just because that is the way Paul and Silas did it. (Like when people jokingly say that KJV was good enough for Paul and Silas . . . .).

I was reading back through this thread and noted that at one point I started talking about "How Great Thou Are" when I obviously meant "Great is thy Faithfulness.
But I was also thinking about the other thing that is becoming larger in my thoughts lately . . . . There are a lot of good Christian songs of all kinds. But not all are worship songs in the sense of corporate worship. Yet there is a tendency in some circles to not differentiate. When it comes to worship time, it is mostly about Him. Less about me. Even less about the church. Not saying I disappear entirely. But much less. That Sara Groves song that I mentioned in those earlier emails is not really corporate worship music. As special music (choir or solo, maybe), but not general congregational singing. But I still like it. Oddly, I place "10,000 Reasons" somewhere near the break between regular worship and all other good Christian songs. The "story" seems to revolve around "me" but only in that it describes God as being the center of everything. So "bless the Lord, Oh my soul" is really solid. Of course, to include the gospel, there is an aspect in which "I" the sinner will always be a part. But I have less "good feeling" toward the pining for glory songs. And "I'll Fly Away" types. To much about me and my woes. I've got them. But that does not mean that songs of the life to come or mourning over loss are verboten. But they have specific places (in my worship-ology). And I fail to mention that songs that are truly prayers are generally good (if they are generally good, if you get my drift). Doesn't matter how "me" or "we" those get. How much we need a good "Lord have mercy on me" — in song or in prayer (or both combined). . . . . . Squirrel!! If I am not repeating myself (and if I am not repeating myself (and . . .)) there is a pretty good song recently by Mercy Me. Overall a great song. But there is one thing that really bugs me. The chorus effectively says "greater is the one living inside of me than he who is living in the world." Absolutely great. But then they stop and sing "In the woooorrrrld" all drawn out two or three times before repeating the whole phrase again. And it is so upbeat. Why does "in the world" get emphasized so strongly in a "makes you wanna dance" kind of upbeat way? I think they messed up (IMHO). . . . . . OK. Back to my ramblings. While style is partly a matter of taste and partly a matter of what fits the lyrics, I have tended toward more a more contemplative feel lately. There are surely times to be bombastic. But even those can sometimes be turned down. And slowed down. Give us some more time and less distraction as we consider what we are singing. (I notice that no one is asking me to be worship leader anywhere.)

The praise of the Lord in these accounts is a quote from Psalm 118:25. I like to read that verse in context as follows (verses 19-26 of Psalm 118), and know it refers to Christ's coming: "Open to me the gates of righteousness; I shall enter through them, I shall give thanks to the LORD. This is the gate of the LORD; The righteous will enter through it. I shall give thanks to You, for You have answered me, And You have become my salvation. The stone which the builders rejected Has become the chief corner stone. This is the LORD’S doing; It is marvelous in our eyes. This is the day which the LORD has made; Let us rejoice and be glad in it. O LORD, do save, we beseech You; O LORD, we beseech You, do send prosperity! Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the LORD; We have blessed you from the house of the LORD." I like the song. I just wish it didn't generally come out so bouncy. Not that bouncy is not at least somewhat appropriate. Just that 6/8 beat of 1 2 3 4 5 6 1 2 3 . . . . sort of has a thing of its own. Someone did it in a way that was not so bouncy and I liked it much better. Smoothed out the emphasis. Made it more worshipful than wanting to do a Vienna Waltz. (I'll admit that I have not heard PCD's version)

I found something very interesting about Hymn 505 in the LSM Hymnal, which I always liked to sing:
"There's a Man in the Glory", Lyrics by Mary E. McDonough (1863 - 1962) LSM has the words here: Words: https://www.hymnal.net/en/hymn/h/505 I even found a copywrite notice under this hymn on another site LSM has the words to the hymnal at. The song is sung nicely here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1_R07hyUzdM Now here's where is gets weird (to me, as a former member of TLC beginning in 1978). I learned by internet search that Mary E. McDonough wrote a book called "God's Plan of Redemption" that is filled with teachings concerning the tripartite man (uses the three circle diagram) and God's work to transform Christians into His image and glorious bride that are amazingly similar to Witness Lee's teachings I learned in the late 1970's - 1980's. The last page of an internet link to that book includes this hymn at: http://marymcdonough.ccws.org/appropriated/index.html Here is a web site that talks about the tripartite man and Mary E. McDonough's (and others') teaching concerning it. Now maybe some former members of TLC from the early 1960's can enlighten me about the relationship between Mary E. McDonough, Watchman Nee, and Witness Lee. Because there is a lot of copying of content going on here, and I'm not sure how this all came about. Nor do I know why Mary's hymn is now copywrited by LSM. ![]() To be fair. I do remember Witness Lee mentioning the other authors mentioned on the site, saying his teachings were built on what they had seen (he often said he "stood on their shoulders" and saw further). I don't remember anything about this Mary E. McDonough though. Now why is this important? Because I had no idea how similar Witness Lee's teachings were to hers, and of course I gave Watchman Nee and Witness Lee the credit for them (because I didn't know). And, I'll bet many others did the same.

I don't recall if Ed had an answer or not, but WL sent a clear message throughout the recovery to don’t do that, humiliating EM in the process. Nevertheless, this is still one of my favorite hymns. I see "The Servant King" is up on the side banner. This is one of the more significant modern hymns that I have come to know in recent years. Covers the gospel and the charge to serve one another in one short poem/song. It should be sung often, and especially at every Easter service, preferably at the closing to send us out to serve.

Ironic that churches sing a song about shouting to the Lord and many churches sing that - they sing about shouting but they don't actually do it. They sing about many things they don't actually do.
But if you actually shout to the Lord in those churches like we do in the Lord's Recovery you would be likely kicked out. |

Thanks for posting this wonderful song: Live like you're loved My thoughts can be summed up nicely in these lyrics: "So go ahead and be who he made you to be" It really brings out the truth that God wants to be so much more than just "building material" for the visible church, or any institute of man. Christian music has been a great help and joy in my "recovery from the Recovery", which is still an ongoing process after 20+ years. I also enjoy Christian radio immensely. Sure, there is a lot of junk out there, but if you find the right station it can be a source of great joy and edification. -

Thanks for sharing your thoughts Unto Him. Part of laying a 'straight stick' of truth for comparison is to share the joy of Jesus and his incredible salvation in songs of praise. I'm glad to contribute, and hope to encourage the saints of God here, .... and build the digital song book for future reference.
