I don't think that the verses that seem to reference "spirit" as a thing (as opposed to a feeling or intent, etc.) require that we understand precisely what a "spirit" is to appreciate what the writer is saying. They surely weren't trying to provide more hidden clues to a doctrine of the human spirit. So why do we need one?
I've read this three times and I'm still not sure what you are saying exactly . . . can you state this another way in no more than a couple sentences perhaps (yes, I went to public schools)?
