To be honest, until Nigel brought this topic up, I was long under the impression that the ark
was in the temple at the time of Jesus. I had just assumed that the ark went missing when Titus destroyed the temple in AD 70. Without thinking this whole thing through, I had assumed that the glory left the temple sometime during the Lord's time on earth.
On the cross, when the Lord released His spirit, the veil was rent in two from top to bottom, and that was God's proof to Israel that the glory in the temple was gone. The priests could now look into the holy of holies, since the veil was removed, and they no longer would perish at the sight of glory.
So I s'pose that I am just not the right guy to ask such deep theological questions.
