If I was Haggai, Zurubbabel, Joshua, or part of the remnant, I would have understood this word from Jehovah as applying to the rebuilt temple in Jerusalem.

Yes it is true, as Nigel points out, that there is no mention of the ark of the covenant being returned to the temple, nor is there scripture that that specifically states that the glory of Jehovah filled this restored temple, (as in the days of Moses and Solomon), but still I can't believe that Haggai's prophetic word did not have immediate applications.

Haggai in his prophetic word specifically addresses the contemporary leaders and residents of Jerusalem, the "glory of the former temple" which some of them may remember, the covenant made at Sinai when Jehovah brought them out of Egypt and filled the Tabernacle with His glory, and refers to God's house (Hag 1.2) being built as "this house" which shall have a "greater glory."

Any comments?
Well, exactly when did the glory exceed the former glory? Why isn't it recorded?

Could it be referring to the fact that Jesus would one day preach there?
