Nigel Tomes and Professor Wright seem to differ, saying only that these prophecies are yet to be fulfilled. It seems to me that they are reading this into the word, whereas a simple perusal of Haggai appears quite different.

I get your point. By saying that there was no evidence of the ark, and nowhere do we see "God's glory filling the temple" as in Moses' experience and Solomon's, and pointing out the continued foriegn influence/occupation, we are left with the uncomfortable options of either Haggai's prophecy being wrong, or his timing being wrong.
The simple reading of Haggai itself doesn't appear to suggest or portend any of that.
