Footnote to a footnote: Ghandi's use of non-violent passive resistence was influenced by Leo Tolstoy's book "The Kingdom of God is Within You." The title of the book is taken from
Luke 17:21. In the book Tolstoy speaks of the principle of
non-violent resistance when confronted by violence, as taught by
Jesus (see
Christian pacifism). Tolstoy sought to separate
Orthodox Russian Christianity, which was merged with the state, from what he believed was the true message of Jesus Christ, as contained in the Gospels, specifically the
