The Bible differentiates between "being saved" and "perishing." Perishing in the context of John 3.16 refers to the eternal lake of fire.
Being saved, however, can have many contexts. Most of which do not refer to the lake of fire. And just because we may pass thru fire, does not mean we are judged in the final lake of fire. One verse which mentions both is I Cor 3.15, "... he shall suffer loss, but he shall be saved, yet thru fire." To suffer loss occurs at the judgment seat of Christ (2 Cor 5.10) but we are still saved. Suffering loss here will be the Lord's discipline, and loss of rewards and blessings.
