You make valid points about tree vs. vine. But Jesus was speaking metaphorically in John 15 so I'm not ready to give up that as a possible extension of the tree of life.
I have another question (I probably shouldn't do this as I am drawn into these type of discussions and it usually gets me into trouble but here goes):
WHY did God create/plant a tree (the TOK) in the garden which bore beautiful, tasty fruit but then BAN the eating of that fruit? You who think the fruit itself wasn't toxic but that it was disobedience that mattered ... why? Is God tempting man?

Because things that are bad often look good to us. Who would be tempted to eat a pile of manure, especially if God told them not to? Remember evil is always a distortion of good. Evil is good perverted. Every evil claims in some way to be actually good. There is no essence of evil. It's always about its relation to good. Few do bad simply because it's bad. They do it because they think in some way it's good. That's why Eve ate, because she wanted to be like God. She just didn't take His way.
